The state with the highest number of murders per 100,000 residents in the past three years was Alabama, according to a police report.
The state had the third highest murder rate in the country in 2014, behind Georgia and California, according the report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
“The rate of murder is higher in Alabama than in most of the states we studied,” said Michael Ladd, a criminologist at the University of Southern Mississippi.
The number of violent crimes in Alabama increased by 3.9% in 2014.
The rate of violent crime was 9.1% in 2015.
Last year, Alabama had the highest murder rates per 100 in the U.S., followed by Georgia at 7.9, and California at 6.9.
